With the war coming to a close, manufacturers were so desperate to embrace the new technology that budgets were thrown out of the window and designers handed a blank piece of canvas on which to unleash their imagination. When a small unassuming Gloster aircraft blazed into the skies in 1941, the rule book was not so much ripped up, as incinerated. The jet engine had announced it’s arrival and British aviation was about to enter new uncharted territory. The next two decades became the most diverse, exciting, innovative and productive period in the history of British aviation, a time when the industry and the Cold War pushed the boundaries of military flight and technology to the limit. So far into the unknown were the designers venturing that a whole generation of experimental jet aircraft, or X-planes in common parlance, were created to prove (or disprove), their theories. These research aircraft contributed to a ‘golden era’ of British trail blazing, a time when test pilots were household names and the world-beating aircraft were a symbol of national pride. And, yes, there was tragedy mixed with the triumph, but perversely this only strengthened the resolve to go ‘further, faster, higher’. Of course, the heady days could not last. The immense costs were unsustainable and the inevitable rationalisation of the British aviation industry rang the death knell for the plethora of manufacturers and their many competing programmes. In this pictorial tribute, we salute 24 of the most significant British X-Planes to ever take to the sky. The photographs have been carefully selected out of the extensive ‘Aeroplane Archive’ for their historic and rarity value. Many are previously unpublished and provide a glorious insight into the men and machines of the post-war generation. They are complemented by ‘period’ cutaways from the talented pens of the ‘Flight’ and ‘Aeroplane’ artists of the era.
