More than 80 years ago in the skies over southern England one of the most important conflicts of the twentieth century was fought. What was christened the Battle of Britain by the British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, during a speech to the House of Commons on 18 June 1940, was the first time opposing air forces alone determined the fate of a country. The Royal Air Force faced the might of the German Luftwaffe in a battle that would have great repercussions for the rest of the war. The Battle of Britain continues to be a source of pride for the Royal Air Force (RAF) over 80 years after it was fought. It is the most recognised single campaign undertaken by the air arm. Over the years since the end of World War Two, the service has continued to honour the memory of those that fought and died fighting the Luftwaffe in the summer of 1940. While that is understandable, it also serves as a subtle reminder of the need to maintain an independent air force. Throughout the decades since the war the RAF has used the legacy of the battle to promote itself.
