The 29 RAF bombers detailed in this, the 56th issue of Aviation Archive, were considered to be the ‘heavies’ of their day. Each aircraft detailed has a unique place within the wider story of the heavy bombers operated by the RAF and while some remain household names, history has allowed others to fade from the collective memory. The part each played in the RAF’s bomber force over the years is told using photographs and contemporary artwork sourced from Key Publishing’s archive. When it comes to the big question as to which was the best of the wartime heavies, there is no doubt that the Lancaster was the nicest to fly – the best pilot’s aeroplane – and circumstances made it the most successful. This is perhaps unsurprising – Avro had two attempts at getting their bomber ‘right’ – producing a good fuselage in the Manchester, and then adding a good wing and better powerplantsn to produce the ‘Lanc’. But later Halifax versions flew higher and faster than the Lancaster and were more survivable. And while many pilots would have chosen a Lancaster for a quick hour, the much more modern Liberator was a better proposition for a long endurance flight, while its 0.50-calibre machine guns offered greater protection than the ‘Lanc’s’ 0.303in weapons.
